On Monday, 3 August, the Palamós Fish Producers’ Organisation (OPP-91) welcomed representatives from the Government of Catalonia, the Government of the Balearic Islands, and OPMallorcaMar, who visited Palamós to learn first-hand about the organisation’s management model and the projects it is developing to enhance the value of local seafood products.

The visit was attended by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Joan Simonet; the Director General for Fisheries, Antoni M. Grau; the President of OPMallorcaMar, Pedro Mercant; its Manager, Magda Molina; its Commercial Director, Marcial Caracena; the Director General for Maritime Policy and Sustainable Fisheries of the Government of Catalonia, Itziar Segarra Díaz; Francesc Benaiges, ; and Cristina Mañas, Manager of OPP-91 and the Palamós Fishermen’s Guild.

The programme began at the offices of the Palamós Fishermen’s Guild, where the OPP-91 team presented the organisation, its structure and the main lines of work included in its Production and Marketing Plan, focused on responsible fisheries management and the promotion of locally sourced seafood.

The visitors also toured the OPP’s fish processing facility, where seafood is prepared to supply schools, healthcare centres and other collective catering services with fresh fish from Palamós. The visit continued at the Fishing Museum and the Barques del Peix exhibition, two key spaces for understanding the town’s fishing heritage and its close connection with the sea.

In the afternoon, the programme included a showcooking session at the Espai del Peix, showcasing the culinary potential of local seafood, followed by a visit to the fishing port and fish auction to learn about the auction process and the marketing system for fresh fish.

These exchanges provide an opportunity for producer organisations to share knowledge, build partnerships and continue working together towards a more sustainable, innovative fisheries sector that adds value to seafood products from their very origin.
