The fish workshop will be able to produce products for sale and will provide schools and health centers with local fish.
The Organization of Fish Producers of Palamós (OPP) now has its own fish workshop: a new equipment that was created with the aim of producing products for sale, bringing local fish to communities such as schools and health centers in its area of influence.

The presentation ceremony of the Fish Obrador was held on Friday, June 16, and was attended by the Director General of Maritime Policy and Sustainable Fisheries, Sergi Tudela, the head of the Coordination and Territorial Management Service, Quim Cifra, the Mayor of Palamos, Lluís Puig Martorell, the President of the OPP Miquel Mir and the Board of Directors of the OPP.

The event began in front of the Fishing Museum, in the fishing port of Palamós, from where the retinue began the visit to the workshop space and where, after the speeches, the attendees were able to taste some of the local species that will be worked, such as horse mackerel, octopus or white shrimp, a product of the coast of Palamós. These tastings were prepared by the Master Peix, fishermen from Palamós, and members of the OPP.

The workshop will produce products for sale to collectivities

The new fish workshop has been built in the facilities of the port of Palamós, and has the machinery and equipment necessary for the preparation and sale of part of the production fished daily by the members of the OPP to reach these new customers. The OPP will assume the aspects related to the handling and commercialization of the production.
The fish workshop will allow the handling of the various species fished in Palamós to facilitate their consumption, while promoting sustainable fishing, raising public awareness of the consumption of local fish as a source of protein, and raising awareness of local species.

Widening the horizons of local fish consumption

Through the “Palamós Peix” project, promoted by the Palamós Town Council, Fundación Promediterránea, Confraria de Pescadors de Palamós, and recently joined by the Fish Producers’ Organization, the initiative was born to introduce local products in the Palamós Hospital and other communities -such as school canteens-, close to the municipality. As a result of this interest, and adding the project promoted by the Regional Council of Baix Empordà for the introduction of fresh fish from the coast in schools in the area, it was decided to create a fish handling workshop with the aim of developing a product to meet this demand.

Among the objectives of the OPP are to promote the consumption of local fish and the knowledge of local species, and to revitalize the fishing sector of Palamós. The first target of this new company is the communities that currently consume imported fish.

The fish workshop will act as a meeting place for the different agents involved in the value chain of Palamós fish, opening up new opportunities and strategies for marketing these products at fair prices for fishermen and consumers.

For the operation of the workshop a total of 3 jobs have been created, with the possibility of increasing this figure, for the performance of tasks ranging from the handling of fish to the most commercial part. The space will also be a relevant point to promote training related to seafood gastronomy and fishing activity to the public, to promote and disseminate the product of Palamós.
These new facilities bring the fishing sector of Palamós to the final consumer and citizens and complete another step in the value chain of Palamós fish.
